The federal government has reopened its investigation into the murder of Emmett Till, the 14-year-old black boy who was abducted and killed by two white men. This story, even 63 years later, remains one of the most striking examples of racial violence in the South.
According to the Justice Department, the renewed inquiry was “based upon the discovery of new information.” It is not clear, however, if the government will be able to bring charges against anyone. The two men who confessed to killing Emmett after they had been acquitted by an all-white jury, are dead.
