Robin Thede, the first Black woman to serve as head writer on a late-night show (The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore), and Insecure creator Issa Rae will collaborate on the new HBO-ordered project titled A Black Lady Sketch Show. Writer and producer Lauren Ashley Smith will join them as well.
Deadline reported, Thede, who is known for her work as a head writer on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, will oversee, act, direct and also write. The half-hour show will feature narrative sketches performed by a core cast of women of color. It will also be written and directed by black women.
Thede will executive produce with Rae via Issa Rae Productions. Smith, who led the writers' room for Thede's BET show The Rundown will write and co-executive produce.
I created “A Black Lady Sketch Show” because I love how many insanely funny black women are grinding in these comedy streets! It’s time the WORLD recognizes. This show is going to be epic and @IssaRae & I are so honored to be bringing this project to @HBO! https://t.co/MK1JD2Qyyl
