Apologies to future Rhythm Roulette participants, Mississippi’s own Big K.R.I.T. has really raised the bar. With his picks of Linda Clifford I’m Yours, Seatrain’s 1970 self-titled sophomore album, and Culture Club’s Waking Up With the House on Fire, K.R.I.T. cobbles together a soulful, nasty beat that he describes as “Today Was a Good Day,’ but a Southern version.” Just when you think he’s laid down some sick production, he just keeps rolling, adding flute trills and textural work until the result sounds like a masterpiece.
The real icing on the cake comes at the end, as K.R.I.T. lays down some smooth vocals for a hook on the track. We see him prepping his rhymes for a verse as well, but that full version won’t be available until next week. In the meantime, peep the new episode of Rhythm Roulette below.
