Ice Cube and Nia Long are getting the family back together. The two are reuniting for a third film in the Are We There Yet? franchise, this one titled Are They Gone Yet?, now in early development at Skydance Sports. It is the first time the pair has returned to the series on the big screen since 2007's Are We Done Yet?, putting nearly two decades between the last chapter and this one.
Ice Cube reprises his role as Nick Persons, the bachelor who got pulled into fatherhood across the first two movies. Nia Long is back as Suzanne, Nick's wife. And the new premise leans right into how much time has passed. Nick's biggest challenge this round is not stepmom skepticism or a house falling apart. It is grandkids.
That is a smart place to pick the story back up. The original Are We There Yet? hit in 2005 and turned Cube into an unlikely family-comedy lead, a lane nobody saw coming from the N.W.A co-founder. The franchise pulled in roughly $156 million across both films and later spun off into a TBS sitcom. Bringing Nick back as a grandfather lets the series age in real time alongside the audience that grew up on it.
Chris Hazzard and Mike Fontana are writing the script. Ice Cube is producing through his CubeVision banner alongside Broken Road's Todd Garner and Jeff Kwatinetz, with Ben Hurwitz and Lauren Gennawey on board as executive producers.
There is no release date yet, and the project is still early, which means casting beyond the two leads and a production timeline are still to come. What is locked is the part that matters most to fans of the series. Nick and Suzanne are coming back, and the two actors who made that household work are running it back one more time.
