Made In America Festival’s Los Angeles debut: What to expect

Jay-Z and Budweiser is bringing the two-day Made in America Festival to Downtown Los Angeles this upcoming Labor Day after making the announcement in April.

The festival comes two years after being attached as an annual event in Philadelphia. Becoming the area’s biggest festival, last year’s Made in America drew 60,000 fans each day to its Benjamin Franklin Parkway location.  Last year’s performances included everyone from Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar to Nine Inch Nails.

Rumors of Hov’s attempt to bring the festival to the West Coast were around for several months. Before the announcement, things reached a fever pitch when L.A. Councilman Jose Huizar requested city services not to issue permits partly in fear of street closures of major downtown streets of his district.  Interestingly enough, city Supervisor Gloria Molina said during the press conference for Made In America jokingly that “L.A. has 99 problems, but Jay Z and Budweiser Made in America ain’t one.”

Expect a wide variety of music genres to grace Grand Park including Rise Against, John Mayor, Weezer, Sublime with Rome, Rita Ora, YG, Chance The Rapper Nipsey Hussle, Kendrick Lamar, Hit-Boy and more. In fact, several acts will play both festivals like Steve Aoki, YG and Will Sparks.

Considering how claustrophobic DTLA is, how is this multi-stage festival going to work? Reportedly, one stage will be set within the boundaries of Grand Park; one at the intersection of 1st and Spring streets; and the last on the City Hall steps facing Spring. Two entry gates are planned to be located on Temple and 2nd.

Though the attention has been put on the festival making its way to Southern California, Philly arguably may have the most robust line-up.  Pharrell, Kanye West, Kings of Leon, De La Soul and more are set to perform on the East Coast edition.
