Kevin Feige is not confirming that Damson Idris is the next Black Panther. He is not denying it either. Asked at a Shanghai press roundtable with Chinese media when fans might finally learn whether Idris is stepping into the role, the Marvel Studios president laughed and said, "Not today."
That answer is doing a lot of work. Feige did not brush off the premise, redirect to Letitia Wright's Shuri, or act confused about why the question was being asked. "Not today" treats the casting as something with an answer and a date attached, just not one he was handing over in that room. He then added that maybe fans could guess the timing, a line the journalist clocked as landing right after the Idris and Black Panther questions.
The rumor has followed Idris for months. The Snowfall star has been floated as the frontrunner to take on a T'Challa recast, a move Marvel has avoided since Chadwick Boseman died in 2020. Nothing is official, and Feige clearly likes it that way for now.

Idris spent six seasons anchoring Snowfall as Franklin Saint, carrying a sprawling crime saga on a performance that went from teenager to kingpin. That kind of range is exactly what a role like T'Challa demands, and it is part of why his name keeps surfacing whenever the recast talk heats up.
Idris himself has stayed loose when the subject comes up, neither confirming nor shutting it down, which only feeds the speculation. For a role this loaded, that silence reads as strategy as much as anything.
For now, the only person who could settle it just smiled and passed. "Not today" is not a no.
