Once again, proving that she can handle any musical genre, Beyoncé made waves at the CMA Awards by performing “Daddy Lessons” in a duet with The Dixie Chicks.
The surprising collaboration seemed to win over the inclusive Nashville crowd as the Dixie Chicks arranged an acoustic, country-style version of “Daddy Lessons,” while Beyoncé let her pipes do the rest.
There’s been some backlash from members of the BeyHive who were disappointed that “Daddy Lessons,” a single from Beyoncé’s 2016 album Lemonade, was not nominated for Song of the Year at the CMAs. It’s led to debates of whether the R&B song was “country enough” to be nominated.
Whether it is or isn’t, one can’t deny that a song with lyrics like: “Came into this world daddy's little girl, and daddy made a soldier out of me,” does not follow the traditional Nashville narrative of storytelling with American folk sound. One also can't deny how much Beyoncé and The Dixie Chicks slayed either.
